GETTING TO AND FROM THE AIRPORT IN LBECK

The city of Lübeck in Schleswig-Holstein has its own airport, but is mainly served by the international airport in Hamburg, which is the second largest in Germany. The Lübeck airport is 8 km south of the city, and was built as a military base in 1917. It was shut down after the First World War but was reopened and expanded by the Luftwaffe after 1933. Lübeck was an important part of the British and American airlift that sustained blockaded Berlin after World War II, and an enlarged terminal for passenger air service was built in 1997. Ryanair offered low-cost flights there from 2000 to 2014 but has moved its operations to Hamburg, and the Lübeck airport is currently served only by Wizz Air flights to Gdansk, Riga, Skopje and Kiev. Motorways A1 to the north and A20 to the east serve the airport, and there is bus service every 6 minutes to central Lübeck; a shuttle bus (A20) connects to the Lübeck rail station when flights arrive. Hourly regional trains from Lübeck to Kiel and Lüneburg stop at the airport’s station.
